Punjab Cabinet Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who is in the news for his objectionable message to woman IAS officer, on Thursday left for Delhi, reportedly to meet Congress President Rahul Gandhi. It is learnt that Channi’s visit is all aimed at saving his ministerial berth, which is in danger. Staff in Channi’s team informed that the minister had sought time from the AIICC president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday itself, immediately after returning from foreign tour but the meeting couldn’t be fixed as Rahul was away.
Notably, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who was also overseas for past couple of days, is expected to return to India by Thursday evening. He too is slated to meet Rahul Gandhi, as learnt. Channi had landed in soup last week, when media broke the news of him sending an objectionable message to a woman IAS officer. The issue was so flared up that Opposition sought his resignation as well as criminal case against him. Amid the controversy, the chief minister had to issue a statement from Tel Aviv on October 24, that after learning about the matter he had made the minister tender apology to the woman officer, after which the matter was settled down. However, while speaking to media Punjab State Woman Commission Chairperson Munisha Gulati also indicated to launch a probe against him, but only after discussing the same with chief minister on his arrival at Chandigarh.
Meanwhile, Channi after returning to Chandigarh also admitted that he had tendered apology to the officer for a message which he shouldn’t have sent. Though he claimed that it was a forwarded message, not a vulgar one, he mentioned that the woman IAS officer had pardoned him on the condition of not repeating so. The way things were unfolded in past couple of days, the demand for his removal had started gaining momentum and finally realising it costing him heavy, the minister on Thursday rushed to Delhi to clear his position to party chief.
